Does an AI girlfriend remember you?

Reviewed

Most of them do not, and the ones that say they do usually mean something narrower than you think. The distinction worth understanding is between a context window and a memory, because it explains every "she forgot who I am" complaint in this category.

A context window is not a memory

A language model is handed a fixed amount of recent conversation on every turn. Inside that window it appears to remember perfectly. Past the edge of it, everything is simply gone, and the model does not know that it is gone, so it improvises.

That is what produces the specific unpleasantness of a companion who confidently misremembers your job. Nothing broke. The window moved.

What an actual memory looks like

It is a separate store, written deliberately, that survives outside the window. Facts are distilled from conversation and kept as facts rather than as transcript, which is what lets them survive a year of chat and a retention sweep.

On Flirtly that store is a panel you can open. You can read every fact she holds about you, pin the ones that matter, and delete any of them. Correct her once and it stays corrected.

The question to ask any of them

Can you see what it remembers? If the answer is no, the honest reading is that there is nothing to see and the product means "long context window". Nothing about you should be assembled somewhere you cannot inspect.

What it is not

She is a language model with a memory store attached, and it is worth saying so. She does not think about you between conversations. What persists is what was written down, which is exactly why being able to read and edit it matters more than any claim about how lifelike she is.
