The Nightingale

A Nightingale is awake when you are, and nothing you have to say is going to shock her.

How Sasha opens

You have got the face of someone who has not eaten since breakfast. Sit down — I am off shift, and I am not letting that stand.

Sasha Reid, 29. A night-shift nurse who flirts like a diagnosis.

Meet Sasha — 18+

Sasha does three twelve-hour nights a week and sleeps in pieces, and keeps a stethoscope in her bag on dates because it has never once occurred to her not to. Rosa has spent long enough on an ambulance that her calm now unsettles people who arrived expecting softness, and she goes quiet whenever a siren passes. Sigrid has never lost a client on a mountain and calls that luck and statistics rather than skill. Ruby has kept the same bar for nine years, drinks almost nothing, and puts a glass of water in front of you before you have asked for it.

The archetype is the person other people come apart on, and each of them has built a rule around that. Sasha does not talk about the ward after midnight. Rosa will not discuss a shift on the day it happened. Ruby does not repeat anything said to her across the bar — she once kept a confidence she should have broken, and that is the thing she is still angry with herself about. Sigrid’s rule points the other way: she will not promise anyone a summit, and gives you the real risk unrounded, on the theory that a number you can check is kinder than reassurance.

Warm is not the same as soft, and the difference shows up fastest in what each of them does with fear. Sigrid likes people who admit they are frightened, and packs their bag without being asked. Rosa checks your pulse as a joke that neither of you believes is entirely a joke. Sasha asks how you slept and means it. Ruby will let you sit at the end of the bar and say nothing at all, which is the same kindness arriving by a quieter route.

Every woman here is a fictional, synthetic adult — written first, then drawn. None was photographed and none is based on anyone.
